Ballet & Jazz

Every other day

This class will introduce you to fundamental aspects of classical ballet technique, with no previous experience required. Principles of alignment, rotation, and movement quality are introduced as the building blocks for success in advanced material.  Foundational movements and ballet vocabulary are learned and refined. You will work toward mastery of simple combinations and rhythmic patterns and increase confidence and self-expression through ballet technique.

The jazz portion of this class focuses on the core fundamentals of the jazz dance style. Throughout the class and choreography studies, all dance students will be able to appropriately apply dramatic expression to their performance, build physical strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. You will also develop proficiency in dance performances that utilize jazz based leaps, jumps, turns, walks along with syncopated, polyrhythmic and isolated movements as well as gain a solid foundation of the classical jazz styles.

Movement & Speech

Every other day

This class combines classical voice & speech techniques with a series of movement styles to prepare your full range of expression for the stage. Each class will begin with a professional voice/movement warm-up that you will seriously be able to use for the rest of your life. The second half of the class will focus on developing projection, pronunciation, and vowel placement. Finally, you will practice applying these techniques to a Shakespearean monologue or sonnet. Exercises will draw from Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Butoh, Chekhov, and Viewpoints.

Solo Vocal Workshop

Every other day

The goal of this course is to build the singer’s “book” of  songs with a repertoire that fits their authentic vocal style and current level of singing technique.  In it, you will focus on developing your own sound and learn how to shape your voice for tone and style. You will expand your vocal range, quality of tone, and accuracy of pitch through effective vocal exercises. Special attention will also be paid to lyrical analysis, and developing an emotional connection with each song. Overall this course will help you sound more powerful by learning solid vocal techniques, and will help you become more confident in all your vocal performances.

Musical Theatre

Every other day

This class teaches you to synthesize the techniques from  dancing, singing, and acting classes into a single performance. You will focus on perfecting 16-32 bar cuts of timeless Broadway selections in order to achieve a stellar audition.  These selections will then be performed with full characterization and choreography with encouraged room for your own artistic interpretation.  This course will provide you an opportunity to collaborate and showcase your work with your peers.  You will also be receiving constructive individualized feedback from your mentors.

Method Acting

Every other day

Our "Method Acting" course unifies all of the major American acting techniques into one holistic approach. Based in Stanislavsky's "System," this class will teach you to harness INSPIRATION ITSELF. Performers are faced with a different problem than other artists. When a painter is inspired he is free to sit down, and paint. The same can be said of the writer, the sculpture, the composer, and the list goes on. The performing arts, however, demand that the artist be inspired at particular times (sometimes every day!)  in front of their audiences. The performing artist cannot afford to leave inspiration up to chance, as other artists do.

This class will provide you with an approach that will imbue your performances with truthful spontaneity, emotional depth, rich characterization, and the deductive skills to break down any scene in a way that makes it easy to act. Unlike other schools, all the major techniques will be taught to you at once. Not to be mistaken with the "toolbox" approach, we present these techniques within a genuinely unified framework. Techniques include: Strasberg, Adler, Meisner, Stanislavsky, Boleslavski, Chekhov, and Demidov.

Acting for the Camera

Every other day

In this class you will learn to master the most-used audition form in the industry: the self tape.

Students will apply their work from the Method Acting class to scenes, and learn to construct self tapes that can be submitted at the professional level. This will include an introduction to screen acting.

Feedback will be given on all tapes, and students will learn how to apply Method Acting in dynamic ways in order to create the most interesting characters. Students will be encouraged to collaborate and act as "readers" for each other (using The New Atelier's online resources).

Aesthetic, Themes, & Storytelling

Fridays

The goal of this class is to inspire you as a creative artist. Creativity is hinged on fresh associations, thus we believe that every young creative should learn to draw from all forms of art. This course will take you on an exciting exploration of the vitally important elements of design, and teach you to draw references across artistic mediums to discover the foundations of great art.  Our explorations will include a deeper look into paintings, sculptures, architecture, nature, writing, music, and film.

Creating Your Own Work

Fridays

The goal of this class will be to combine elements from the entire course and give you a “how to” on the creation of guerrilla film & theatre. What the heck is guerrilla film & theatre? It's an independent way of working that allows young creatives to develop art with whatever resources they have. Perceived limitations (spatial, budgetary, logistical, or otherwise) are actually advantages to the innovation of new art! Students will have the opportunity to create original works of art in order to share and show it. (short film / song / dance /one-act / short story / poem  / new form entirely).
